CHEST PHYSIOTEHRAPY & SUCTIONING
A nebulizer is a medical device that is used to deliver medication directly to the lungs as a mist or aerosol. It is commonly used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and other respiratory disorders.
The role of physiotherapist including:
- Assessment of respiratory status
- Assisting secretion clearance
- Facilitate proper breathing exercise

Chest physiotherapy can be done to both children and elderly who have poor lung function and reduced in lung expansion.
Conditions that can be referred to are like
- Pneumonia
- COVID -19
- Asthma
- Bronchitis
How a nebulizer works:
- When the nebulizer machine is turned on, the compressor generates compressed air or oxygen, which is forced through the tubing and into the medication cup. The liquid medication in the cup is converted into a mist or aerosol as the air passes through it. The mist is then inhaled by the patient through the mask or mouthpiece.
- Nebulizers are particularly effective in delivering medication to the lungs, as the fine mist produced by the nebulizer allows the medication to reach deep into the airways, providing quick relief for respiratory symptoms.
- It is important to follow the instructions provided by the healthcare provider or the manufacturer of the nebulizer to ensure proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of the device. It is also crucial to use the prescribed medication and dosage as directed by the healthcare professional.
